Last March, then-Express-News Editor Robert Rivard spiked a column critical of H-E-B's East Side stores. In an email to a community leader explaining the move, he dismissed columnist Scott Stroud's reporting as not up to snuff and described the grocery chain glowingly, as a model of corporate virtue. But that's old news.
This isn't: Less than a month later, Rivard and wife Monika Maeckle closed on a real estate deal with an entity controlled by Charles Butt, chairman of H-E-B – a transaction with a major advertiser that the editor didn't disclose to the newspaper's readers.
Rivard, 58, left the Express-News abruptly on September 19.
