Sculley = Brainpower


There was at least relief, if not outright joy, in Mayorville Tuesday when news began to leak that City Manager Sheryl Sculley would pick up where the Brainpower Initiative task force left off. Last week's B Session presentation – ideally the beginning of the political campaign to win voter support for increasing the local sales tax by an 1/8-cent to pay for a model pre-K program – went swell until the upper-digit Council districts began asking granular questions like: how did the City calculate the estimated 4,000 kids who could really use the program's services? Task-force consultant Gillian Williams, of the Rensselaerville's School Turnaround program, struggled to explain why they couldn't break that number down, or at least generalize about the academic improvements the initiative might deliver.
