BexarMet bill could make it out alive

With the Lege two weeks away from hanging it up (and preparing for a special session), Senator Carlos Uresti's BexarMet legislation is expected to emerge soon from the House Calendars Committee, where many bills go to die and out of which only a relative handful make it out alive. It's expected to head to a House vote Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday.

A D1 handoff

District 1 candidate Chris Forbrich, who drew 12 percent of the vote, called yesterday to confirm that he is backing former MALDEF attorney and musician Diego Bernal, who emerged from Saturday's contest with a fat lead over retired firefighter Ralph Medina.

If Republicans get their fondest redistricting wish, the center of gravity in the detested Congressman Lloyd Doggett's district will move from Travis County to Bexar, with something approaching 60 percent of its population rooted here.

A new name in redistricting fight

So as we read one of the two federal lawsuits filed in SA Monday with the aim of blowing up the GOP redistricting machinery, a name stood out because we hadn't seen it the coverage we'd read: Shannon Perez, lobbyist for the Service Employees International Union. Based in San Antonio, she's a familiar face at City Hall and under the Pink Dome, and she's co-plaintiff with State Representative Harold Dutton Jr., a Houston Democrat. (The Mexican American Legislative Caucus brought the other complaint Monday.)
