Illustration by Jeremiah TeutschLast week, the San Antonio Opera's board of directors voted to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, effectively shuttering the scrappy company after 16 years and more than 60 major performances. The news follows the opera's decision to cancel its February production of Don Giovanni, the second time it was forced to scratch a scheduled production in two years.
"I'm just very sad," said board Vice Chair Jeanie Wyatt. "We feel like we exhausted everything we could to try to find support, and we were not successful, unfortunately." Wyatt has served on the board for four years, and her firm, South Texas Money Management, has been a sustaining underwriter of the opera.
Several arts organizations have responded to the opera's request for help and are accepting tickets to canceled SAO performances in whole or partial trade for their events, including the San Pedro Playhouse and the opera company's founding director Mark Richter's new venture, Off Broadway Productions, which is putting on Cosi Fan Tutte in late February.
