Downtown mobile food trucks on the way


San Antonio is on the verge of introducing a six-month pilot program for downtown mobile food-truck vendors, a plan which dovetails with Mayor Julián Castro’s oft-stated goal of making the City’s urban core a vibrant source of culture as well as commerce.

Castro predictably showed great enthusiasm for the program when its details were laid out by City staffers at a March 21 meeting of the City Council’s Governance Committee (which Castro chairs), even suggesting Southtown as a possible alternative option to the three vending sites recommended by staff.

“We want this to be more complementary than competitive (with existing restaurants),” Castro said, implicitly acknowledging the possible resistance from some downtown restaurant owners over the idea of opening up the field to mobile establishments.
