
Chad Johnson felt he needed to mature before he could wear a handlebar mustache. When he was 8, one of his mentors sprouted the look, and he couldn't wait to try it himself. Today he's 40 and a member of the San Antonio Mustache Society, a social group of like-minded individuals who get together to discuss life, love and grooming tips.
"It's an expression of personality," he says. Although sometimes pop culture makes it seem less like a show of individuality and more like a fad. "It's in fashion with the hipster crowd," he notes.
Johnson, however, is a lifer.
"My mortician will be waxing my mustache," he says wryly.
