This weekend I caught Ballet San Antonio's final performance of the lesser-known comedy Coppelia, which marked the company's first production under new artistic director Gabriel Zertuche. One of San Antonio's first introductions to the raspy-voiced Zertuche (who served as ballet master before his promotion) was his recent interview with Fox 29, in which he explained the show's premise. Sure, maybe he could use a little more on-screen enthusiasm, but the new guy in charge certainly comes across as the classic artiste preserving the love of dance in our city.
I thought this about her performance in The Nutcracker as well: It's so easy to get lost in prima ballerina Sarah Aujon's psychedelic journey of flowing movement. And who would have guessed that a ballet could be funnier than an episode of Three's Company? The Suzanne Somers-esque Aujon is quite the comedienne, but Saki Yabumoto stole the show with her damn-near-holy Act III solo.
