As I witnessed the swarms of spectators methodically raising their camera phones like hungry paparazzi to snag fotos y recuerdos at last night's Luminaria 2012, I realized that the cliche of camera-addicted Asian tourists stopped being funny about 15 years ago. If this festival wants to build an archive, rest assured, documentation won’t be a problem.
And if raising a camera phone in the air has become a modern expression of approval, Luminaria is here to stay.
To my right, a trio from the Scarlet Darlings Burlesque Troupe, painted head to toe as Day of the Dead skeletons and posed within a vertical shell of multicolored balloon lamps, attracted Marilyn Monroe level attention.
