When Cynthia Craig went to visit her teenage son Lorenzo at the Texas Youth Commission State Home in Corsicana last December, she noticed a young kid wearing a pair of shoes that looked identical to a pair she’d sent to Lorenzo.
When Cynthia asked Lorenzo, a former Sam Houston High School basketball star who landed in TYC in 2010, about the coincidence, he told her: “Oh yeah, Mama, I gave them to him for Christmas, because his people weren’t going to bring him nothing.”
This is the Lorenzo Craig that his family knows: the good-hearted kid who forgets how bleak his own predicament is, because he’s so busy trying to help out his friends. But District Judge Carmen Kelsey apparently did not see that Lorenzo Craig when she handed down a sentence last month that will require Lorenzo, who only recently turned 19, to spend the next 18 years of his life in prison with hardened criminals.
