Hilbig's inside job

Judge Steven Hilbig recalls digging a ditch that would soon be 100 yards long and 4 feet wide at Memorial High School under the hot summer sun. He was about 13 and working with his five brothers in his father's plumbing business. Wiping beads of sweat off his brow, he looked at the half-finished ditch and thought, "I don't want to be doing this the rest of my life."

The power of a moment's decision would eventually lead him to a long, successful career in the law and local politics. Hilbig, now 60, is one of seven judges on Texas’ 4th Court of Appeals. This fall he faces challenger Luz Elena Chapa in the general election.
