Melissa Fletcher Stoeltje reported in Sunday’s Express-News on a North Side nonprofit called A Woman's Haven that receives state funding to counsel women dealing with unwanted pregnancies. The center’s purpose is to encourage women to go full-term rather than seek an abortion, and in its zeal it has been violating federal and state rules by proselytizing in place of counseling, and pushing scare tactics as science.
In 2005, state lawmakers began diverting funding from pregnancy-prevention and medical screening programs to crisis pregnancy centers like A Woman's Haven, which are not required to have medical staff and are not licensed or regulated beyond the loosely enforced funding guidelines discussed in Stoeltje’s article.
