Beer has no party affiliation. Beer is a uniter, not a divider.
That much was obvious last Friday when 800 locals descended on Main Plaza to sample free brew and rally support for legislation that would allow Texas brewpubs to sell their products off-premises, a long-discussed plan consistently squashed by the powerful beer-distributor lobby.
It’s not often that elected officials enthusiastically encourage constituents to consume more alcohol, but that’s exactly what the bill’s sponsor, state Rep. Mike Villarreal, D-San Antonio, did at Main Plaza, so long as that alcohol was produced in a Texas craft brewery. In the classic spirit of "Buy American," Villarreal’s unmistakable message was "Drink Texan."
