Reed's shadow trial


Illustration by Jeremiah TeutschIllustration by Jeremiah TeutschWednesday morning, District Court Judge Raymond Angelini ordered a new trial "in the interest of justice" for defendant Kathleen Kavooras Pierce, convicted but not sentenced earlier this year for a check-kiting scheme. The ruling is a major setback for the district attorney's office, which won the verdict after it obtained a search warrant and seized documents from the defense during trial. That maneuver was unusual and controversial enough that the lengthy hearing drew a crowd to Angelini's courtroom, and unwanted attention – local, state and national legal associations filed amicus briefs in support of the defense.  

But if Pierce got the remedy she deserved, the San Antonio legal community isn't satisfied that the DA's office did.
