What the hell's going on in Hollywood Park?


If you're judging from the white-hot campaign rhetoric, Hollywood Park's May 12 election will result in one of two things: either a cabal of insurgents will dismantle the machinery of government or a group of bumblers will continue to screw up City Hall's finances.

Indeed, the nasty turn that politics has taken in this North Side bedroom community almost makes the South Side's bitter rivalries look like a respectful meeting of the minds. The problems start with the poisonous relationship that's developed between Mayor Bob Sartor and the five-member City Council, and they're exacerbated by the loss of a fire-services contract last year that punched a hole in the town's balance sheet.
