Image courtesy WalmartDistrict 9 Councilwoman Elisa Chan was praised for her negotiating skills and a steel backbone at Wednesday’s press conference announcing an agreement between Walmart and the many stakeholders who opposed its plans to build a Supercenter at Wurzbach Parkway and Blanco Road. But former Mayor Phil Hardberger, whose name graces the grand city park next door that became a rallying point for the opposition, owned the show.
The neighborhoods that surround the site won significant concessions from Walmart and the owners of the land, who are still in the process of closing the sale. Walmart will build a smaller store than planned – 165,000 square feet rather than 180,000. And it will include deep buffer zones on all sides: 50 feet along Wurzbach Parkway, 75 feet along Blanco (including a drainage easement that’s already in place), and 300 feet minimum between the store and the surrounding homes and park.
