Jeff Wentworth’s election-night party wasn’t gloomy exactly. There was none of the quiet, air-rushing-out-of-the-balloon despondence you sense at “victory celebrations” when it finally hits the campaign workers that they just sweated away the last few months of their lives for nothing.
No, the small collection of loyalists watching the returns at Chester’s Hamburgers were pensive, not sad. They looked at the three-candidate bottleneck in the GOP field for Wentworth’s state Senate seat, and didn’t know what to think. That’s where Wentworth came in.
With a slight grin creasing his thin, weathered face, the veteran San Antonio Republican conceded that he’d been surprised by the close election, but not in the way analysts might have guessed. “I’m pleasantly surprised,” Wentworth said before pausing for a moment, possibly to think about whether he really meant it.
