City Hall comfy with Convention contract

The San Antonio City Council unanimously approved a $304-million expansion of the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center Thursday, awarding the contract to the joint venture Hunt-Zachry. Hunt-Zachry scored the highest among the four responding finalists, with a 10-point lead over the next highest-scoring contender. The process was not without controversy, however, because one of the evaluators, Deputy City Manager Pat DiGiovanni, recently accepted a job as CEO of Centro Partnership. David Zachry, CEO of Zachry Corp., is Centro’s vice chairman. Express-News columnist Brian Chasnoff detailed the conflict of interest in a story that appeared online Thursday.

Mayor Julian Castro said that even though there were close relationships between the parties, he felt the process was fair and conducted with integrity.
