Stovall's race against time

Gold’s Gym has never been known as a hotbed of San Antonio political deal-making. But that’s where Robert Stovall’s underdog campaign for tax assessor-collector was hatched.

Jim Lunz, the semi-retired godfather of the Bexar County GOP, befriended Stovall, the head of a family owned wholesale business, at the gym about six years ago. “We seemed to work out at the same time, and be showering and getting dressed at the same time,” Lunz says. “He indicated that he and his wife had gotten their kids all out of the house, and he was interested in getting involved in the community. Of course, I’m always looking for potential candidates.”

Last November, Republican fundraiser Janelle McArthur called Lunz to inform him that longtime Bexar County Tax Assessor-Collector Sylvia Romo would not be running for reelection, because she planned to compete for the Democratic nomination in the newly created 35th Congressional District of Texas. McArthur urged Lunz to find a Republican for the tax assessor-collector race. The next day, Lunz took Stovall out to get a bagel and talk politics.
